Diablo: Unbound Respec: Changing Your Build in the Town Phase
Diablo: Unbound lets you respecialize your build during the Town Phase. What is confirmed about respec, what it might cost, and what the publisher has not said.
Last updated:
Yes, Diablo: Unbound has respecialization — the publisher lists it as a Town Phase action, alongside upgrading skills and managing loot. What is not confirmed is how it works: cost, frequency, and what exactly it lets you change.
Where respec sits in the loop
A run alternates between dungeon levels and the Town Phase. The publisher describes the Town Phase as the moment you portal back to a nearby town and spend resources on three things:
- Improve skills — spend on the skill tree.
- Manage loot — deal with what you are carrying.
- Respecialize your build — change the build you committed to.
That third item is unusual for a campaign board game, where choices are typically locked once made. Its existence tells you something about the design: the publisher expects players to encounter situations where their build is wrong, and prefers letting them fix it rather than forcing a restart.
What respec probably means — and why we will not pretend to know
In a deck-building cooperative game, "build" usually means the combination of cards, skill-tree nodes and equipment. A respec could touch any or all of those, and the difference is enormous:

| What could be respec-able | Effect on the game |
|---|---|
| Skill-tree nodes only | Moderate — you keep your cards, change your branches |
| Cards and skills | Large — you can rebuild the engine mid-campaign |
| Everything including gear | Very large — effectively a do-over each Town Phase |
The publisher has not said which. Anyone describing a specific respec cost today is inventing it.
Why this changes how you should play
Even without the details, respec changes three decisions.
Your class pick is less permanent than it looks. If a build can be reworked, the cost of choosing a class whose subsystem you turn out not to enjoy is lower — though class itself is probably still fixed.
A bad first act is recoverable. Groups that reach act two underpowered have a stated mechanism for correcting course. That is a meaningful safety net for a nine-level campaign.
Resource allocation becomes a real decision. Respec presumably costs something. Every resource spent on respec is a resource not spent on skills — which is exactly the kind of tension that makes Town Phases interesting rather than admin.
The four questions a rulebook has to answer
- What does respec cost, and in which resource?
- How often can it be used — once per Town Phase, once per act, unlimited?
- What can be changed: skill-tree nodes, cards, gear, or the class itself?
- Can different players respec independently, or is it a group action?
Until those are answered, the honest planning advice is: do not build a strategy that depends on respec being free. If it turns out to be cheap, you have lost nothing by playing flexibly; if it turns out to be expensive, a group that planned around it will be stuck.

Frequently asked questions
Can you respec in Diablo: Unbound?
Yes. The publisher lists respecializing your build as an action available in the Town Phase, alongside improving skills and managing loot. The cost and the rules for it have not been published.
Does respec cost anything?
Unknown. No cost, resource or limit has been announced. The fact that it happens in the Town Phase, where resources are spent, suggests it is not free — but that is inference, not a publisher statement.
Can you change class mid-campaign?
Unknown, and probably not. Respecialization is described as changing a build, which in a class-based game usually means staying within the class. Nothing has been said about swapping classes.
